Military Veterans and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

Military Veterans and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).

Memorial Day is approaching. It’s a day we take to reflect on those who gave the ultimate sacrifice while serving in our country’s military. We are grateful for this service and will always remember the fallen.

In this blog, we want to take some time to discuss problems facing service members who are still with us. Specifically, the issue of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) in veterans of war. Here are a few things to know about military veterans and TBI, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs:

1) Veterans who were near bomb blasts may experience faster brain aging, even if the blasts didn’t cause concussions. This could make rehabilitation take longer than it would for others and might lead to issues such as dementia at an early age.

2) Daily tasks may be more challenging for veterans who suffer from a combination of depression, PTSD, and TBI. This is why many veterans need comprehensive, holistic treatment approaches.

3) Repeated blast exposures can lower glucose metabolism in the brain’s cerebellum, which coordinates and regulates muscle activity. Blasts also lead to the build-up of proteins associated with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

4) Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is often associated with athletes who play football and other contact sports, but it’s also a possible outcome of exposure to blasts.

5) Veterans exposed to blasts from bombs, grenades, and other devices may still have brain damage even if they have no symptoms of TBI.
